To make things as straightforward as possible for you, we will break down the tasks into three categories - those that need to be performed in early Autumn, those that need to be performed in mid-Autumn, and those that need to be performed towards the end of the Autumn. Moreover, we will further divide the tips into two subcategories. One will be focused on ornamental and herbal gardens, while the other will be targeting fruit and vegetable gardens.

Autumn Gardening tips - Fruit & Vegetable Gardens

It is very important to follow these autumn gardening tips in order to get the most out of your garden and properly prepare it for the Winter months that always seem to come too fast.

Without further ado, let’s dive right into the first set of autumn gardening tips.

Early autumn gardening tips

As promised, we are starting with the early autumn gardening tips. Below you can first find the tips for ornamental and herbal gardens, followed by the tips for fruit and vegetable gardens.

Ornamental & Herbal Gardens

It is highly recommended to perform the following gardening tasks on your ornamental/herbal garden in the early parts of Autumn:

  • Sow liver and mint for winter use.
  • Divide your larger bush herbs into smaller ones and then transplant them.
  • In case of a relatively dry Autumn (t.i. with no significant rain), you can still pick and dry your herbs.
  • Make sure to collect the seeds of your matured perennial plants.
  • Trim your taller bushes (e.g.: rose bushes).
  • Trim your perennial plants and remove all dying shoots.
  • Early Autumn is the best time to sow certain perennial plants.
  • Make sure to track the temperature. In case it falls below 5°C, you need to move your ornamental citrus and cactus trees into the areas protected against low temperature.

Fruit & Vegetable Gardens

In case you are taking care of a vegetable/fruit garden, then you need to perform the following task in the early parts of Autumn:

  • Make sure to pick all mature fruits
  • Pick all the rotten fruits from your trees and burn them to prevent the spreading of potentially harmful diseases to your plants.
  • Treat the soil properly to prepare it for the planting of new fruit trees.
  • Plant your apple trees.
  • Regularly fertilize your tomatoes in order to ensure that the fruits remain resistant to diseases.

Clean and properly store all your gardening tools and flowerherb pots

Mid-autumn gardening tips

Hopefully, you’ve done well in the initial days of the Autumn. However, the work continues and in order to make the most of your garden, you need to apply additional gardening tips provided below.

Ornamental & Herbal Gardens

It is highly recommended to perform the following gardening tasks on your ornamental/herbal garden throughout the middle of Autumn:

  • Plant Spring-blooming bulbs (e.g.: Tulips, Narcissus, etc.)
  • Mid-Autumn is the proper time to sow certain perennial plants.
  • Trim tall bushes and roses.
  • Move all your potted plants (e.g.: olives, rosemary, oleander, etc.) into an enclosed area (basements, greenhouses, etc.).
  • Dig out Dahlia tubers and store them in a dark basement.

Fruit & Vegetable Gardens

In case you are taking care of a vegetable/fruit garden, then you need to perform the following task in the mid parts of Autumn:

  • This is the time for the main harvest and proper storage of many fruits and vegetables.
  • Plant “Autumn” garlic and ‘Bianco di Magio’ onion for early harvest.
  • Clean up your garden beams and cover the ‘empty’ ones with straw or hay.
  • Plant cloves of garlic into properly--drained soil.

Late autumn gardening tips

Autumn is coming to its end and Winter is coming soon. As such, it is important to do the tasks presented below with maximum care and devotion. While all three parts of Autumn are very important, we could argue that late autumn gardening tips may bear the most significance.

Ornamental & Herbal Gardens

It is highly recommended to perform the following gardening tasks on your ornamental/herbal garden during the final weeks of Autumn:

  • Initial trimming and shaping of deciduous bushes.
  • Set in place proper frost protection for your perennial plants, grasses, and delicate bushes.
  • Set in place bird feeders.
  • Move all your potted plants into an enclosed area in case you haven’t done so in Mid-Autumn weeks.
  • Clean and properly store all your gardening tools and flower/herb pots.
  • In case you are already expecting below 0°C temperatures, make sure to turn off your outdoor water supply and let the water out of your garden hoses. Also, empty your outdoor water storage containers.

If you are a Bokashi Organko user, add your fermented content to the compost pile

Fruit & Vegetable Gardens

In case you are taking care of a vegetable/fruit garden, then you need to perform the following task in the final weeks of Autumn:

  • Pick black radish, underground kohlrabi, carrots, etc. and store them properly (ideally, you place them in a basement and cover them with soil, slightly moist sand, or sawdust).
  • You can leave your kale, chicory, winter salads, parsley, and even carrots in your garden.
  • Set up some sort of winter bug “hotel”.
  • Cover your composting pile(s) with hay, straw, or cardboard. If you are already a Bokashi Organko user, this is also a great time to add your fermented content to the compost pile.
  • Plow your field and garden beams.
  • You may spread some lime across the soil where you will grow potatoes for disinfection.
  • Throughout the entire Autumn and Winter, you may scatter the ashes across the plowed soil.
  • If you are growing asparagus, trim all dry branches and cover their field with weathered stale manure.
  • Plant baby fruit trees and protect them against wild animals.
  • Plant vine seedlings and cover them with soil in order to protect them against frost.
