In the last decade, the amount of packaging waste in the EU has increased by almost 25%, posing a significant challenge for a sustainable future. Without appropriate measures, this amount could increase by an additional 19% by 2030. A staggering 46% increase in plastic packaging waste is expected by the same year.
Two years ago, the EU proposed a reform of the regulations governing packaging waste, primarily due to these increases, partly also due to the rapid growth of online shopping and the spread of takeaway products.
The goals of the new EU rules for more sustainable packaging include reducing packaging by 5% by 2030, 10% by 2035, and 15% by 2040, mandatory recycling options for packaging by 2030, banning single-use plastics in catering by 2030, and introducing a maximum level of empty space in boxes, which will be 50%.
